What to Wear for Professional Headshots (So You Still Feel Like Yourself)
Choosing what to wear for headshots can feel harder than the session itself.
Most people aren’t worried about the photos — they’re worried about getting it wrong.
Looking too formal.
Too casual.
Or just not like themselves.
If that’s where you are, it’s simpler than it seems.
Start with what already feels like you
You don’t need to buy anything new.
In fact, it’s usually better if you don’t.
The best place to start is something you already wear in your business — something that feels comfortable, familiar, and like you on a good day.
Because if it feels right in real life, it will look right in your photos.
Keep it simple
Clothing should support you, not take attention away.
Soft colours, simple shapes, and minimal details tend to work best.
Things to avoid:
busy patterns
large logos
anything that feels uncomfortable
If you’re unsure, simpler is almost always the better choice.
Think about how you want to come across
Before choosing outfits, it helps to think about how you want to be seen.
Not in a strategic way — just in a human one.
Do you want to feel:
calm and grounded
approachable
creative
quietly professional
Your clothes and accesories can support that without needing to say too much.
Bring a small selection
You don’t need a full wardrobe.
A couple of options is often enough, and for longer sessions we can include a few more changes if it feels right.
Nothing complicated — just enough to give you a bit of variety without overthinking it.
Layers
A jacket, knit, or light layer can add subtle variation without changing your look completely.
It also gives your images a bit more depth, especially in natural light.
You don’t have to figure it out on your own
Most people aren’t completely sure what works best — and that’s completely fine.
I guide you through the process in a simple, calm way, so nothing feels overwhelming.
