Headshots vs Branding Photography: What’s the Difference?
If you’re not sure which service is right for you, you’re not alone. The line between headshots and branding photography has become less obvious over the years, but the purpose behind each is still very different.
As a branding and headshot photographer based in Fife, Central Scotland, I often get asked which option is the better fit.
What are modern headshots?
Headshots have changed significantly over the last decade. They are no longer stiff, corporate images with flat lighting and neutral expressions.
Today, headshots are natural, relaxed portraits. They take into account your environment, body language, expression and overall energy. They feel more human, more personal, and far less uniform.
In simple terms, headshots show:
what you look like
who you are
The focus is on you as a person.
What is branding photography?
Branding photography goes far beyond a portrait.
It tells a fuller story about you and your business. A branding session is designed to communicate not just who you are, but how you work and what you stand for.
Branding photography shows:
what you look like
who you are
what you do
how you do it
who you do it for
where you work
your tools, process and environment
your values and inspiration
It creates a visual identity for your brand, a whole set of photographs to support your marketing efforts.
How the preparation differs
The preparation process reflects the difference between the two.
For headshots, the focus is simple and intentional. We choose a location that supports your brand, plan outfits that feel aligned and photograph well, and sometimes include a small prop to create ease and natural movement.
A Pilates teacher and a solicitor should not have the same type of headshot, and this is always considered.
Branding photography requires a deeper level of planning.
We start with a clarity conversation about your business, your audience, your values and the energy you want to communicate. We look at what makes you different and how you want to be perceived.
Only then do we plan the shoot, from location and styling to props, lighting and direction. Everything is tailored to reflect your brand. Even the way I guide your body language and expressions, and how the images are selected and edited, is influenced by this process.
Do branding sessions include headshots?
Yes, most branding sessions include headshots and portraits.
The difference is that they sit within a much wider visual story, giving you a complete set of images to use across your website, social media and marketing.
Which one is right for you?
Short, simple:
If you need one or two strong, natural images for LinkedIn or your website, headshots are usually enough.
If you want a fuller set of images that show your work, personality and brand, then a branding session is the better fit.
If you’re still unsure, you’re always welcome to get in touch and we can talk it through.
